Consumerist goes inside AOL's Customer Retention Manual. When I lived in LA for a few months during college, I just used a free AOL trial disk as my ISP. When I called up to cancel after the trial, it took me like a half hour just to get out of the call, but I laughed it off because I'd gotten a summer's worth of dialup for free.
