My brother
got a letter published in the New York Times, which means he beats me to publication there. Don't forget that
I got quoted in the Washington Post, though. But yeah, he wins this round. Nice job.
So for the past few months or so I’ve been using Twitter, which is a strange little mix of instant messenger, blogging, and email. Here’s a great explanation of what exactly it is. You’ve probably heard of Twitter already (I’m hardly on the cutting edge on this one), but when I started using it, I figured I’d punch out a few tweets and give up on it. But somehow, I’ve “tweeted” (that’s what they call it) over 1200 times now, and I’m not giving up anytime soon.
And I’ve discovered something else. I also put my tweets on my Facebook account, where everyone I know can see them, and old friends have come in out of the blue to reply to something I said in my tweets. And even new friends have found something interesting there — they chime in with other opinions on what I’m saying, have kept general tabs on where I’m at (so that the next time they see me, I learn more about them as well), and have even disagreed with me or given different viewpoints on something that, without Twitter, I normally would have kept to myself.
So this weekend I updated mikeschramm.com with the singular plan of putting my Twitter feed here on the blog. You blog readers are probably the most distant people in my life (I have no idea who most of you are), but you’re good folks, and you seem to care about what I’m into as well. Plus, I haven’t been very good at keeping up the links here, and I’ve been sharing a lot of that stuff on Twitter, so while I’ll still linkblog when I see something good, I’ll use Twitter for the same thing.
It’s a work in progress — I’d like to make sure to get the replies out of the mix (because when I say @someone you folks here on the blog will have no idea what I’m talking about), and I’m not sure how to format them — the tweet-to-single post thing looks a little strange, so I’m also trying a daily digest of what I say on Twitter.
Anyway, that’s why you’re going to start seeing little 140 character tweets pop up on here. Some of them might be quite personal (you’ll probably hear when I go out to a new restaurant, and while I’ll try to keep it as relevant as possible, you may hear when I think I’m feeling under the weather), but I figure that if you routinely come to a place called “mikeschramm.com,” you won’t have a problem with knowing a little bit about Mike Schramm.
wow, I am amazed how smoothly I just upgraded Wordpress from 2.0 to 2.5. I was worried I would break my blog completely.
just beat the darkness -- slightly above average shooter, goes a little too long for me though
man I've had to restart my mini like 5 times in the past two weeks because of apple's software updates -- whatever happened to always on?
prepping for el talkcast de TUAW
how it is possible that I can feel overwhelmed by work on a sunday morning?
it's late. saw a play and ate at what might be my new favorite restaurant tonight though
wow insider show going live in about 1/2 hour at wcradio.com, listen in! :)
Congrats to @richstyles, my 100th follower! *balloons drop from the ceiling*
and no sooner did I finish that tweet than Just What I Needed came up on shuffle in iTunes. freaky!
holycrap, the Cars' whole first album coming to Rock Band. Day made. No Magic, but Best Friend's Girl and Just What I Needed? Sold.
I think Letterman is the most talented person I've ever seen on television.
@joshgray no alluding to whathappenedinpiedmont.com
hahaha Mortal Combat vs DC would be a frightening game. Do we really want to see an MK fatality done on Batman? Robin, sure, but Bats?
I feel bad when I see a viral marketing campaign coming from a mile away. they try so hard, but seriously who believes this stuff any more?
can I haz brightkite invite?
@joshgray ummm quake? I felt nothing.
and tim conway! What a great show
whoah was that a bloomberg cameo on 30 rock?
Really digging
Zooey Deschanel lately -- I liked her a lot already just from
seeing her in Weeds, but the
She & Him project with M. Ward is awesome.
Give Us Today our Daily Terror is a complete remake of The Birds, except with
all the actual birds digitally removed. I watched a few minutes of it, and it's pretty wacky. The digital manipulation isn't exactly perfect, but then again that makes it a little creepier -- you know what's supposed to be happening, but you can't quite tell what is.
This movie (at least I'm fairly sure it was this movie) was filming on my street here in Chicago. I didn't see Christian Bale or Johnny Depp though -- just a bunch of fat guys with big trailer trucks and lighting equipment.
This dude
traded his smoking habit for a Pokemon habit. I'm not a smoker, but I wonder if the switching cravings idea would work for almost anything. Maybe every time I want to play videogames I go for a run? Of course that's one reason I
want Wii Fit -- this guy did
nothing but Wii Fit for a few months and he did great.
Lilly Allen is now a (hot) blonde, and has a new album coming out! Should I be embarrased to say that I liked
her other one? Anyone who has such a great voice and throws in ska influences wins my vote. (This, by the way, is the first in a series of posts tonight designed to push those pictures down off the top of the page. Expect more in a bit).
goin out to a guitar hero contest tonight, wish me luck
Don't tell anyone, but I am the
Spy of the Month at 826 CHI (that writing center that you all donated money for when I grew that moustache -- remember that? I remember it like it happened in the very last entry). It's a pretty covert honor, but an honor nonetheless.
@joshgray told you it was amazing. joco is coming here 5/3
