Oscar the cat is a Harbringer of Death.
Helpful hints from the American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention. Velociraptor attack is the 3rd leading cause of death for men age 27-29. I did not know that.
One of the up and coming Chicago comics I spotlighted in my Newcity piece, Pat Brice, was found dead in a hotel at a wedding last Sunday (cause of death isn't known, pending toxicology report). It's an incredibly sad tragedy for Chicago comedy. Local comedy blog The Bastion has a collection of comics' thoughts, as well as a showcase of Brice's work.
Love this shirt (seen on Joystiq).
DIY Life, new blog from Weblogs, Inc. Looks nice, and has WoW Insider's Ryan Carter on staff as well.
I've been using ForecastFox in Firefox (from Accuweather apparently), for my weather forecasts, but they've been really wrong lately-- last week they said it would rain, and I ended up carrying an umbrella all over a sunny Chicago, and today it's the same thing-- thunderstorm in my browser, and sun coming in the window from outside. Anyone want to recommend a more accurate weather service?
I saw Michael Moore's new movie Sicko yesterday, and it is a pretty devastating documentary on the health care system. I'm a Michael Moore fan, but not a drooling Moore zombie. I know he presents the important facts and leaves the others out (to be fair, we all do that, but Moore gets called out for it simply because he's taking on the system). Anyway, in the movie, Moore talks about how the guy who ran an anti-Michael Moore website almost had to close down because he couldn't pay his health insurance. Moore decided, he says in the movie, that no one should have to make the choice between exercising their First Amendment right and keeping their wife healthy, so he actually sent the guy a check to keep his website open. Here's the actual scene from the movie (watch it first, before you read anything), and here's the guy's take on the whole thing. I know the conservatives love to call Moore a "limousine liberal" and of course he has to make a buck, but from everything I've seen, he's an upstanding guy who tries to right things where he sees wrong. Related: here's Moore telling off Wolf Blitzer for getting the facts wrong about both of his movies (and a little thing called the Iraq War). Update: Moore kept it up against CNN on Larry King. Not sure I'm still interested enough to watch this whole thing (if he needs to convince me that they make mistakes, he needn't bother), but keep it up MM. (via Jaime)

Well, I was planning to write something really interesting about this, but it didn’t come out right, so here goes: I had my last day at my day job on Friday, and I am now a fulltime freelancer. I work from home, set my own schedule, and I’ve got a lot more free time. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and the opportunity just came around last month or so. It is a little scary (I have to get my own insurance now, and pay my own taxes, not to mention that I have to be a little disciplined), but let me tell you, after just one day, it seems like things are going to go great.

The other big news is that since I no longer have any physical ties to this location, I’m probably going to be moving soon, and probably to LA. Nothing’s concrete yet (although I will be in LA the first week in August, if you happen to be out there), but I’m surveying my options and making sure freelancing works.

So. That’s not the insightful article I had planned to write about this, but at least now you know if you haven’t heard before. Should be fun, wish me luck.

Tom Jones covers Arctic Monkeys (as Aerosmith's Joe Perry plays guitar). Um wow. Sounds totally different. But good for him.
Joystiq (WoW Insider's flagship site) redesigns. Looks great (and I hope the redesign love trickles down to the rest of the WIN sites). But isn't that default Paper Mario profile icon a little infringing?
